Origin / History Of Amapiano
Firstly, Amapiano is a type of music genre, initially created in the South Africa, and so it can be traced back to 2012. There has been lots of speculations and myths behind the origin and concept of the new piano sound. However, we are here to give you some undiluted facts about the best South African house music and where you can download the mp3 files for free.
Firstly, it is important to note that Amapiano is actually a sound which was curated from combination of other sounds like Deep house, Gqom, Jazz and even Lounge music, but unique in it’s Kwaito basslines, very high pitched piano sounds, heavy drum beats, a little sound from the Bacardi house genre and the low tempo 90s house rhythms.
Certainly, not that anyone is surely correct, however, speculations have it that the new sound emanated from Gauteng, and for the fact that it borrows its unique sound from other South African house genres, many others believe that the very popular genre comes from other places like Pretoria (where Barcadi was created), Soweto, Katlehong, Vosloorus, Alexandra etc; In additiion, these speculations of town of origin, like earlier stated are made because some genres whose sounds could be found in the Amapiano genre came from these towns.
Artistes Who Formed / Created The Sound
Actually, there have been many Djs who want to claim credit for the creation and production of the amapiano genre, but in truth, no one really knows and it is nearly impossible to accurately point out the producer, why is that so?
Well, during the adolescent days of the piano sound, around 2016, there had been circulation of the great sound but then the quality was very low, this most importantly, shows that the sound was made by bedroom producers who have very limited resources to fine-tune the genre then, these producers and Djs independently work on their own copy privately on reception or hearing of the song “randomly” and the sound was mainly shared on messaging apps, online forums and other file sharing devices.
Further more, during those time, the sound spread and circulated faster than anyone could ever imagine, by 2019 anyone who is a fan of music in South Africa must have heard about the new tune or even have a copy on his device, it also could be heard in the streets of SA, from cars, phone speakers, or even retail shops.

According to the co-founder of Born In Soweto, Siphiwe Ngwenya; he however says and we quote; “If you put one hundred guys in a room and you asked them where [AmaPiano] started, you’ll get one hundred answers and some very heated debates,” and so he is very correct.
Similarly, another South African Dj and radio host- DJ Da Kruk, has this to say about the new sound, and we also quote; “The AmaPiano movement has a huge mixtape culture attached to it, which I think was a vehicle to move new music from one ear to the next while promoting your DJ skills and mixing capabilities.” He says the success of the sound was as a result of wider SA Dj culture and diversities.
Also in the same vein, according to Miz Dee, who is a very popular female Dj and leading figure in the SA’s dance community, she claims to have witnessed the change of trends from the early days of Afro house to the new techno-leaning gqom. In an interview with For the Record, she said; “AmaPiano is now by far the most talked about and the most relevant house music genre in South Africa”. She further stated, “It’s a culture of its own.”
However, we know the recent promoters and producers who refined and worked on the SA genre to give us the wonderful sound we hear today, and still, these are majorly DIY djs and producers; from 2018, the key players in the piano sound include but not limited to Kabza de Small and Mfr Souls.
Amapiano In Other Countries
Currently, the new sound genre in SA has spread like wild fire across other African countries like Nigeria, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, and even Zimbabwe.
Honestly, it does not matter which country you are in, it does not also matter which culture or anything; as long as you are a music fan and enjoy good combination of beats and sounds to produce some musical notes, you will surely love, vibe to and enjoy the Amapiano sound mix.
On the other hand, the piano music has moved from just a music genre to a culture which has its own club nights, festivals, and most importantly has its own form of dance, indeed the popular phrases “Amapiano Is A Lifestyle”, “Amapiano Is a Culture” “Amapiano Is Life” etc are all correct.
